A revision of the Scopaeus mutatus species group (Staphylinidae, Paederinae), with description of new species from Anatolia and the Caucasus

The Scopaeus mutatus species group, which is distributed in Anatolia, the Caucasus, and Middle East, is revised, and both its monophyly and phylogenetic relations within Scopaeus are discussed. The species group comprises S. alaniensis Coiffait, 1969,S. gusarovi sp. n., S. imbecillus sp. n., S. khnzoriani Coiffait, 1968, S. meridioanatolicus sp. n., and S. mutatus Gemminger & Harold, 1868, which are described, and for which the distribution is mapped and discussed. Based on the examination of the lectotype of S. pusillus Hochhuth, 1849, the identity of S. mutatus (replacement name for S. pusillus), which to this day had been misinterpreted, is resolved. In consequence S. ta-tyschensis Coiffait, 1968 is synonymized with S. mutatus, and S. khnzorianiis revali-dated from synonymy with S. mutatus. With the example of the lectotype of S. pusillus, the label data of which contradict the original description as regards type locality and collector, the status of historical specimens with imprecise labeldata of the Caucasus expedition of A. von Gotsch in the Hochhuth collection is discussed.
