Range extension of Odontesthes argentinensis (Valenciennes, 1835) ( Teleostei: Atherinopsidae) in the southwestern Atlantic, with additional records in the Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil

Species of the Atherinopsidae are restricted to the New World, where they inhabit freshwater coastal environments as well as marine coastal temperate, tropical and subtropical oceanic waters (Dyer, 2006; Nelson, 2006). The genus Odontesthes includes 19 valid species commonly known as ‘pejerrey’ in South American Spanish, or ‘peixe-rei’ in Brazilian Portuguese (Dyer, 1998, 2006; Di Dario et al., 2011; Eschmeyer, 2013). The southernmost record of Odontesthes argentinensis (Valenciennes, 1835) is the Province of Chubut, Argentina, at approximately 44°S, whereas its northern limit was considered to be at 23°S (Sao Paulo State, Brazil; e.g., ~ Bemvenuti, 2000; Dyer, 2006). However, Di Dario et al. (2011) recently reported on the occurrence of three adult specimens of O. argentinensis (178.6–212 mm SL) collected during the austral summer (December 2008) at 22°30′S, in Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil.
