SCREENING OF MANGO CULTIVARS AGAINST MANGO HOPPER COMPLEX BASED ON MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERS OF THE PLANT

Fifteen mango cultivars viz., Alphonso, Baneshan, Chausa, Dadamio, Dashehari, Jamadar, Kesar, Banarasi Langra, Neelum, Pairi, Rajapuri, Makaram, Suvarnrekha, Totapuri and Vashibadami were screened against infestation of hopper complex (population andits associated damage) on the basis of morphological characters of the plant (i) tree height (ii) leaf area (iii) leaf shape (iv) leaf colour (new leaves) (v) inflorescence length (vi) inflorescence colour (vii) hair on inflorescence rachis and (vii) yield characters. The results indicate that mean hopper population among cultivars varied significantly and ranged from 1.61 to 7.52 per twig on Totapuri and Alphonso, respectively. Similar observations were made on these cultivars with respect to hopper associated damages like hopper egg laying injury (2.98-12.22 per cent per twig) and sooty mold (0.55-3.07 SM grade). Correlation of hopper population and its egg laying damage with morphological characters was found non-significant. In terms of yield, it was highest (263.24 Kg/ tree) and lowest (154.31) on Totapuri and Chausa, respectively. So, on the basis of hopper population and its associated damage, Totapuri and Alphonso have been found least and mostsusceptible and were categorized as resistant and susceptible cultivars, respectively.
