Influence of 4-tert-butylcatechol on the emulsion polymerization of styrene

In the paper, the effect of 4-tert-butylcatechol (TBC) on the emulsion polymerization of styrene and the product properties is elucidated. It is established that the oxidation of TBC results in 4-tert-butyl-1,2-benzoquinone long-live free radicals. The mechanism of the free radicals formation and two different ways in which these radicals can influence the styrene polymerization are presented using experimental data and computer simulation.
