12 Tilapia zillii were divided into 4 groups. Group 1 (2 fish) received PMSG (500 IU/kg body weight) 2 days after spawning followed by HCG (500 IU/kg body weight) 5 days after spawning. Group 2 (3 fish) received PMSG 3 days after spawning and HCG 3days later (dosages as for group 1). Group 3 (4 fish) received the same dosages of hormones with PMSG 8 days after spawning and HCG 3 days later. Group 4 (3 fish) were untreated controls. Eight of the 9 hormone-treated fish spawned; none of the control fish spawned. Fish in groups 1 and 2 spawned 7 days after the start of spawning. Three of the 4 fish in group 3 spawned on the day after HCG treatment. The percentage of ova that developed to the hatching stage ranged from 0 to 79% (mean = 34%).
