Tropospheric aerosols play an important role in many atmospheric processes such as atmospheric chemistry,radiative transfer or cloud formation.Furthermore,atmospheric aerosols affect human health in polluted environments.Thus tropospheric aerosols have become an increasingly important issue of environmental protection policy and air pollution prevention.In order to achieve a better understanding of the global aerosol cycles as well as the relevance of anthropogenic aerosol sources such as road traffic (particularly soot from diesel powered vehicles),global simulations including a comprehensive representation of atmospheric aerosols are required.Up to now,particulate matter is treated in a simplified way in most of the global model systems currently in use:Commonly only the aerosol mass concentration is explicitly prognosed,whereas the number concentration has to be obtained diagnostically from climatological number-size distributions.In the present study,the global model system ECHAM4/MADE has been developed which includes a detailed numerical scheme to simulate aerosol size distributions.The computational efficiency of the model system enables long-term climate simulations taking into account detailed aerosol dynamics.
