THIS IS THE first issue of the Journal devoted to information governance, and it's an important subject. I believe that information governance is the next force that will help transform HIM practice.Information governance is not a brand-new subject. In 2008, a report from The Economist noted: "Companies are beginning to realize that the full value of information depends in large part on the policies and procedures that govern and control its use, access, analysis, retention, and protection."1 That was the start of the conversation.Healthcare is starting to talk about information governance. But not all the conversations are using the same words. "Information governance" is the term AHIMA prefers, but others are talking about data governance. Sometimes it sounds more like "you say potayto, I say potahto." And yet, we can't "call the whole thing off," as.Ira and George Gershwin wrote. We need to understand and work through these semantic nuances because information governance is critical to the future of healthcare.
