In this paper, the effect of surface modification on the dielectric properties of 0-3 barium titanate/polypropylene (BT/PP) nanocomposites is investigated. Sodium oleate (SOA) modified BT nanoparticles (BT-SOA) were successfully prepared and the thickness of SOA layer was measured to be 2 nm. BT/PP and BT-SOA/PP nanocomposites, containing filler loadings from 0 to 20 volume percent, were fabricated by using a melt blending progress. Compared with BT/PP nanocomposites, the compatibility between BT-SOA and PP matrix in BT-SOA/PP nanocomposites was improved, so that BT-SOA/PP exhibited lower dielectric loss and higher break-down strength. In light of these improved dielectric properties, the BT-SOA/PP nanocomposites are attractive nanodielectrics for high energy density storage applications.
