Fiona describes what many elderly-and not-so-elderly-people experience as Alzheimer disease (AD) begins its slow and steady erasure of memories and other intellectual abilities.Researchers are seeking to better understand dementia's various forms and use this information to devise ways to slow its progression or prevent it altogether. At the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology held here last month, investigators presented insights into genes that contribute to the development of dementia as well as new evidence about the effects of secondhand smoke and hormone therapy on dementia.
