An introduction to advanced modelling techniques for complex systems analysis and control

In modern control paradigms, modelling and simulation play an important role. However; in controller design practice the simulation process is often unnecessarily repeated. This may be the result of the absence of integrated simulation environments, which allow the modeller to keep the information on systems and their representing models online in an organized information-based system This on-line availability in conjunction with an advisory system makes the initiation of a new modelling session an instantiation of an already existing one. It permits the user to benefit from existing models and prior knowledge can be re-used in the prediction of the behavior of the system under study Achieving this can be done by what is called "modelling in the large". A generic and relatively abstract fermentation example will serve as an illustration.
