摘要

Collaborative research in China in the field of agriculture started by agreement reached during the first meeting of the Japan-China Agricultural Science and Technology Exchange Group in 1982. Researches on rice breeding, targeting new cold-tolerant,disease-tolerant and high-yielding varieties, between Tropical Agricultural Research Center (TARC, predecessor of JIRCAS) and Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Science continued until 1991 and attained remarkable outcomes. The collaboration became wider andmore comprehensive to encompass various research fields such as vegetable cultivation, management of marginal dry lands and rice plant protection from insects and so on. The first multi-disciplinary research project entitled "Development of SustainableProduction and Utilization of Major Food Resources in China" was officially agreed at the 16th meeting of the Group in 1997 and was initiated with the signing of a comprehensive agreement by representatives from the governments of both countries (Ministry of Agriculture, China and Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries, Japan).
