The veil has finally been lifted on substantial Turkish jet fuel demand after the International Energy Agency (IEA) noticed earlier this year that the non-EU member was misreporting large jet fuel sales to international airlines as exports. Turkish jet fuel demand topped 2 million metric tons in the first half of this year, versus just 763,000 tons erroneously reported to the IEA for the same period last year. Jet Fuel Intelligence estimates that Turkish demand was more like 1.8 million tons during the first half of 2014, still implying double-digit demand growth this year (see table). The JFI estimate takes into account the sharp drop in reported Turkish exports -from 1.23 million tons in the first half of 2014 to just 175,000 tons this year -resulting from the same accounting error. IEA statisticians tell JFI that they hope to issue corrections for Turkish data prior to December 2014 soon, but in the meantime caution against using historic IEA data for comparison (JFI May25’15). This year’s more accurate measurement of Turkish jet fuel demand puts it in fifth place behind the UK, Germany, France and Spain but ahead of Italy and the Netherlands in the list of OECD Europe jet markets by size.
