Besides sampling coal for payment purposes, mechanical samplers are used extensively for controlling product quality at various stages of processing. In large mining operations where multiple seams are mined, sampling individual streams is important to blending the streams to meet customer specifications. An example is real-time sorting of raw coal by using a sampler in combination with an online analyser to determine those coals that can go directly to the customer and those that must first be washed or blended to meet customer specifications. At large international shipping ports, sampling systems are used to sample various inbound coals in order to blend multiple sourced coals to meet customer requirements. At destination, customers use mechanical samplers to verify the product they receive and to sort coals into various piles based on quality for blending later to meet specific boiler and environmental requirements. Utilities also use as-fired samplers to determine power plant performance. Coke producers use samplers to determine blends of various coals in order to make a specific quality of coke for steel producers. Again, sampling is integral to processing and controlling the quality of coal.
