Safety in mines is a broad subject but, at its heart, it is the safety of individual miners that is paramount. In a hierarchy of need, first would come correct ventilation for the r the miners to breathe, then to ensure that the atmosphere is clear of explosive mixes of methane. After ensuring that the support of any roof structures and strata are secure, attention then turns to the safe operation and good working practices of any underground machinery - this calling for correct machine guarding and competence in the workplace to operate equipment in a proper and safe manner.
