摘要

"Fretting," defined as "surface damage generated by microscopic oscillations in the tangential direction between two solid bodies in contact" [1], is a phenomenon occurring to a different extent in machinery and equipment with a frequency beyond imagination. Sites of intensive fretting development are (1) contact surfaces designed to constrain primarily relative movements (e.g., different types of joints and press-fitted parts of shafts, tool holders of machine tools, and the like), (2) contact surfaces that are not supposed to perform any primary relative movements (e.g., unmovable bearings, gears, safety valves, relays and switches, and the like), (3) sliding surfaces that perform microscopic reciprocating movements and that are subjected to oscillations (e.g., joint units of machines of different types, robots, and so on).
