An evaluation of fretting wear performance of various additive systems in different grease matrices was undertaken. This current work is focused on comparing and contrasting data from both the High Frequency Reciprocating Rig (HFRR) and the Fafnir fretting rig (ASTM D 4170), as well as looking at phosphorus-containing additive response at different treat rates under various test conditions. The HFRR was used to generate oscillating wear data while the Fafnir fretting wear test was included due to its continued use to measure fretting wear performance and its incorporation in specifications such as NLGI's Wheel Bearing and Chassis Grease specification (GC-LB). A discussion of the correlation between these tests and optimization of additive treat levels is included.
