Reaction of methyl 2-arylethylcarbamates with thionyl chloride: Formation of benzothiazine and benzo[b]thiophene ring systems

The reaction of methyl 2-arylethylcarbamates with thionyl chloride induced a sulfur mediated ring closure to form benzothiazine and benzo[b]thiophene ring systems with concomitant chlorination of he aromatic ring.
