As part of an ongoing investigation to reduce parasitic losses in Li/thionyl chloride cells, various studies were performed in order to gain an understanding of how to improve this system. Comparisons of microcalorimetric heat outputs between this system and Li/organic electrolyte systems that have lower steady state heat outputs are reported. The relationship between heat output, intermittent and continuous discharge, and storage conditions are contrasted between the two basically different systems.
