Silodosin in the treatment of the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia: profile report.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most common disorders in men, with its prevalence increasing with age. BPH is a histolog-ical diagnosis characterized by the proliferation of smooth muscle and epithelial cells within the prostatic transition zone. This disorder clinically manifests as lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). LUTS can be classified into three categories: storage (irritative), voiding (obstructive) and post-micturition symptoms. Bladder outlet obstruction occurs in men with severe BPH and leads to acute or chronic urinary retention. The impact of LUTS secondary to BPH can have a significant effect on a patient's health-related quality of life.
