Polychlorinated Dibenzo-p-Dioxins, Dibenzofurans, and Biphenyls in the Serum of Firefighters Who Participated in Extinguishing the 1992 Fire at a Cable Manufacturing Plant in Irkutsk Oblast

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and biphenyls (PCBs) are important subjects for environmental monitoring because of their environmental stability, high toxicity, and potential to accumulate in biological systems. PCDD/PCDFs are not the intentional products of industrial synthesis, but rather impurities of some materials or products of combustion. PCBs are also combustion products, but most of them are industrial products that were used as dielectrics and other technological liquids. The specific "dioxin" toxicity is characteristic of 17 out of 210 PCDD/PCDF congeners and 12 out of 209 PCB ones [1].
