By using a variable speed drive as a "super soft starter", a Dutch sand processing company has solved a costly problem that was tripping site power supplies when a large crusher was turned on. The crusher can now be started at any time of the day without voltage dips or failures. Dutch sand treatment plant was suffering frequent blackouts when a 160kW crusher started up and tripped the power supply, despite being fitted with a soft-start which limited the starting current to around 300% of the nominal value (around 900A).
