Beacons or sounders are built onto machinery and equipment to provide a visual or audible message, whether to warn about the status of a machine or to call for action and assistance. But what should a design engineer think about when specifying a solution? Werma explains. Today, beacons and sounders are found within industrial, retail and leisure applications - with one example being the flashing lights found on automated checkouts to alert supervisors to a problem. Their main areas of use, however, are to: warn visually and audibly of a change in the status of a machine or piece of equipment; to advise whether it is safe to proceed or not; or to call for action and assistance to resolve an issue which has arisen.
