The Public Health and Safety Department at the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) reported that 45% of food services in schools in the Emirate of Dubai fail to meet nutritional guidelines. The health authority conducted a survey of the 216 schools in Dubai-82 public and 134 private programs-in an effort to provide baseline data before developing policies to ensure better food provision, according to Ali Al Marzooqi, director of the Public Health and Safety Department of the Health Policy and Strategy Sector at the DHA. Seventy-seven percent of the schools provide daily sandwiches, 67% daily bread and cereals, and 54% fresh fruit salads, but they are only on the menu three times per week. Thirty percent of the schools serve burgers and hot dogs, and 21% provide fresh milk daily. Sixty-three percent of the schools serve processed fruit juices, and 7% serve soft drinks daily. The data will provide the department information to plan new policies.
