A study was conducted to analyze quantum and waveguide properties of multilayered nanostructures and microstructures. Analytical equations were derived to describe the quantum properties of multiple quantum well (MQW) structures, while a similar dispersion equation was derived to describe the optical waveguide properties of multilayered microstructures. These equations allowed the researchers to find the energy eigenvalues for MQW structures or the eigenvalues of the effective refractive index for layered waveguide structures and the distribution of wave functions or the distribution of transverse field profiles. The calculations were performed for an MQW structure with one, two, three, four, and five quantum wells by assuming the effective particle mass to be the same for all layers and all quantum wells to have the same depth and width with the same width of the barrier layers between them.
