Pigmented Coatings-Pigment Volume Concentration Considerations

The 2007 Mattiello lecture presented by Professor Bierwagen is contained in its entirety here.The paper contains an outline of his career and provides a referenced account of the primary research work he and co-workers have undertaken over nearly four decades at different institutions.His early-published studies described the theory and practicality of quantitatively predicting the critical PVC of a paint formulation from pigment and polymer data.In a subsequent study he showed that in latex paints void formation occurred below the critical PVC and subsequently introduced a'coarseness'factor related to variations in localised PVC within a coating to explain this observation.
