Denise Smith's Large Vessels

Denise Smith makes 20- to 30-lb. vessels with complex negative and positive images, and 3" porcelain pendants with intricate designs and multiple colored slips. This first column is about her techniques for making big pots. Smith's layered colored slip pendants will be covered next issue. Denise Smith: I'm the only so-called artist in my family that I've been able to locate. I don't think my parents or relatives knew what to make of my interest in art, especially when it went from realistic to abstract. I was pretty much isolated. My dad would have been happy if I'd painted a picture of a horse on his garage door. But my interest didn't lie in that direction. Smith: From my earliest childhood, I have always done some kind of drawing. In high school, in Dearborn, we had a brand new school and an experimental program of three days of English, one day of art, and one day of music. A whole world opened up through clay, so I went to art school at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit. It is now called the Center for Creative Studies.
