One of the toughest issues in my work is watching top-line products I have followed for years - and the companies that make them - struggle. During the past five years, I have watched the backhoe loader market stumble along and hardly get off the ground since the recession in 2009. Backhoe loaders have long been a mainstay for building contractors. Going back to the 1950s and '60s, they've been one of the most popular products used in construction - by municipalities, landscapers and multiple other users. Historically, yearly sales often soared to more than 30,000 units at the peak of a business cycle, falling to 20,000 units at the low end of the cycle.
