There is no shortage of very difficult, nasty and grueling applications for engines. But there are few with the same degree of difficulty as engine-driven rammers. Typically found in construction, roadbuilding and even landscaping industries, rammers have a simple task - deliver a downward force, consistently and repeatedly, to compact soil, sand and other materials into a flat, consistent surface. In the process of delivering that force - which rammer manufacturers quantify as "impact force" or even "blows per minute" - the machines and the engines that drive them take a pounding that makes even normal service life seem something of a miracle.
