Hybrid electric vehicles love lots of starts and stops. That's why there is so much interest in hybrid electric transit buses, delivery trucks, refuse pickup trucks and taxis. Indeed, many of these HEVs are already in routine service. Hybrid features like regenerative braking and start-stop operation contribute in a large measure to the hybrid's ability to save fuel and reduce emissions. A natural application for hybrids yet to be broadly explored is in school buses. School buses make frequent stops and starts, and reducing pollution - especially from diesel engines typically used in most school buses - is of great importance, as diesel emissions can be especially harmful to young children. Fuel saving is also vital to school districts that have to live within often limited budgets.
