A new Variable-geometry Intake System (VIS) bas been developed by Italy's Same Deutz-Fahr Group to improve the performance of its six-liter, six-cylinder turbo/intercooled diesels used on the Same agricultural tractor line. This system has been conceived to retain the manufacturing simplicity of two-valve/cylinder engines in production for many years (favorably reflecting on the final cost of the tractor and servicing requirements), while increasing performance to levels quite similar to those obtained by more sophisticated, multivalve engine designs. The VIS has been developed and tested specifically for the top of the range Same engine —the 1000.6 WTR diesel, a bore 105 x stroke 115.5 mm, six-cylinder in-line, turbo/intercooled unit rated 139 kW at 2350 r/min.
