Combined-cycle power plants are designed for an operating lifetime of 30 to 40 years by far exceeding the design life of all main components - gas turbines, steam turbines and generators. For example, the gas turbines are usually designed for an operating cycle of 100000 equivalent operating hours (EOH) or 3000 starts, which, according to the type of service, are usually achieved in 10 or more years, but could be even less when the machines are subject to frequent starts. After reaching this mark, a gas turbine can be refurbished with the aim of stating a new 100000 EOH cycle, but this implies the fulfillment of a well-established procedure that goes beyond the so-called major overhaul and is denoted a Lifetime Extension (LIE).
