Electric locomotives like Bombardier Transportation's TRAXX AC (alternating current) and TRAXX DC (direct current) units can haul passenger and freight trains efficiently and with essentially zero toxic and C02 emissions. However, they require a constant connection with overhead catenaries supplying electricity to the electric motors.
