The Netherlands-based Damen Shipyards has begun a project for what is said will be the first ever reverse stern drive (RSD) tug to be fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG). The tug is to be launched to the market in 2016. The project results from the cooperation of three leading companies: Damen Shipyards; German engine manufacturer MTU Friedrichshafen, a subsidiary of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG; and Danish harbor towage operator Svitzer. The companies said that the new RSD CNG tug combines high power with lower fuel costs and a substantial reduction in emissions.
