With the launch of Audi's SQ7, we've got yet another acronym to add to the long list that exists in the motoring world. EPC is the new term, which stands for Electric Powered Compressor. While that may seem like gobbledegook to most people, it actually serves a rather important purpose, and is designed to make turbo lag a thing of the past. It works alongside the twin turbochargers, delivering power in less than 250 milliseconds, and filling in the gaps when the turbochargers are spooling up. It means that the power is designed to be instantaneous as soon as you press the accelerator, though in practice there's still some delay, though nothing like you would experience in rivals and other engines in the Q7 range. The EPC contributes as much as 17bhp to the system. It has all been made possible with the introduction of a new 48-volt lithium-ion battery electric subsystem, which helps power this and items like the electromechanical active roll stabilisation system that also makes its debut on the SQ7. This is designed to reduce the amount of body roll when cornering, reducing understeer and ultimately meaning that the driver can tackle corners at faster speeds. Other hi-tech equipment includes a sport differential that includes four-wheelsteering, aiding manoeuvrability at low speeds, and enhancing high speed stability.
