The gas compression and pipeline industries rely on all types of torque wrenches, torque multipliers, pressure gauges and more, to do jobs accurately and keep things flowing smoothly. However, a torque tool that's within manufacturer's specifications when new, gradually goes out of spec through normal wear or improper use. Traditionally, when a torque wrench or multiplier needs to be recalibrated it is gathered, crated and shipped to the manufacturer or a metrology shop. After a few weeks, it's returned to the user renewed to factory specs. This process involves a lot of time and expense, plus it means the tool can be out of service for a month or longer.
