This special edition of Disability and Rehabilitation is based on a group of papers and discussions from a colloquium held at University College London, UK in June 2010. The event, titled 'Social Perspectives in Acquired Communication Disorders', provided an opportunity for participants to share and discuss work in progress on a range of topics with a focus on the 'social', including quality of life, psychosocial wellbeing, participation and social action through conversation. The overall theme emerged from a growing awareness amongst communication disorder researchers and practitioners that social and psychological issues have a core relevance to clinical and social interventions but still remain relatively underspecified and under researched in terms of theoretical and clinical frameworks, clinical tools and outcome measures, especially in the field of motor speech disorders.
