A description is given of the proglacial areas of Vernagt-Guslarferner and HintereisKesselwandferner based on the enclosed map. These areas are defined by the glacial extent during the last maximum in the years 1848 for Vernagtferner and between 1856 and 1860 for Hintereisferner. The glacial extent around 1770/80 was larger only by a small amount. The extent of the former glacial lake dammed by Vernagtferner in the year 1848 and the highest water level reached in 1681 are reconstructed on the basis of soil profiles and lichen measurements. Beyond the proglacial area the early postglacial advance can be seen at the "Rofenberg" location. Results of scientific analyses (evidence of a medieval glacier maximum around 1300 AD, spring water temperatures, pollen analyses) are quoted and the active mass movements in the area are shown. With the help of the map the postglacial landscape history of a high alpine region can be reconstructed very accurately in a high chronological resolution.
