Bilateral isolated acute cataracts in three newly diagnosed insulin dependent diabetes mellitus young patients.

To the Editor, Cataract is a very frequent finding in adults with diabetes mellitus , On the contrary, acutely developed cataract in young insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) patients at the onset of the disease has been rarely reported [2-8]. This form of cataract may be permanent or transient, and may occur before any retinopathy is seen [2,6]. Herein, we report the metabolic and ophthalmologic findings of three male young subjects affected by lens opacities, which appeared within 30 days from IDDM diagnosis and became so advanced to require surgery in both eyes of each patient. The diagnosis of IDDM has been confirmed in each subject by the presence of autoimmune markers of the disease (ICA, GAD, and IA2).
