1. To prepare the peppers, place them whole directly on gas burners set to high. Using tongs, blacken the peppers on all sides. Remove the peppers from the flame, and place in a bowl or Ziploc plastic bag. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or zip up the bag. Set aside to cool. (For electric stoves and ovens, cut the peppers in half, and discard the seeds and membranes. Place the peppers on a foil-lined broiler pan, skin side up. Broil the peppers in the oven about 4 to 5 inches from the heat source, or until completely blackened. With tongs, remove the peppers and place in a bowl or Ziploc bag. Set aside.) 2. Meanwhile, heat the oil over medium heat. Saute the onion and garlic for 5 to 6 minutes. Add the crushed red pepper, and season with a little salt and pepper. Add the onion and garlic to a blender or food processor.
