Feature-Coal-to-Chemicals Emerges as Key Petchem Route in China

Coal-to-Chemicals (CTC) development continues to emerge as a viable conversion route for producers in China. Coal, historically underutilized in the chemicals industry compared to oil, is seen as an important method of deriving specialty chemicals, such as plastics, butadiene, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride and acetaldehyde, all based on acetylene. While the petrochemical industry shifted from coal as cheaper feedstocks emerged, coal is once again re-emerging as a CTC feedstock. A number of firms, including some of the largest Chinese state-owned energy companies, continue to shift their production portfolios to favor CTC investment.
