The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) proposed rule to impose limits on greenhouse gas emissions on newly constructed power plants may have a significant impact on the coal industry, Energybiz reported. The proposed rule would allow such plants to emit only 1,300-1,400 pounds of C02 per megawatt hour. Coal-based power plants would need to implement carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology to meet these standards. Implementing CCS would increase electricity prices, putting coal-based power generation at a disadvantage.
