India to increase LNG imports

India is expected to increase LNG imports the next few years as domestic production declines, The Wall Street Journal reported May 8, citing statements from oil minister Jaipal Reddy. Natural gas output in the country, currently estimated at 104 million cubic meters a day (cm/d, 3.7 billion cubic feet a day (bcf/d)), is about 62 million cubic meters a day (2.2 bcf/d) short of demand. Industry sources estimate that India's regasification capacity will reach approximately 50 million tonnes per year (mt/y) by 2016-2017 up from 13.6 mt/y currently.
