Singapore plans to expand first LNG terminal

Singapore has yet to launch operations at its first LNG facility but it plans to expand the terminal's capacity by half, The Wall Street Journal said. The country is positioning itself to become a trading hub for Asian LNG markets, a government minister said. The expansion reflects expectations that China and India will join traditional LNG buyers like Japan and South Korea as major markets. LNG export projects are under development in Australia, Russia, the U.S. and Canada, all with an eye on Asia. Singapore will use the LNG terminal to diversify its own energy mix. "Our objective is really to further prepare for a future with more LNG as part of Singapore's energy mix," said S. Iswaran, second minister for home affairs and trade and industry.
