Sturman's digital-valve actuation system is designed to achieve diesel-like efficiency by holding air-intake valves open longer to reduce spark-engine throttling losses. See Figure 3. Throttling losses occur when a spark-ignition engine must pull (suck) air as RPM is reduced against the throttle to maintain a constant air-fuel ratio. A diesel engine controls RPM simply by reducing fuel injected into the cylinder. The air volume remains relatively constant, no throttling losses.
