About MLPs

MLPs were created by an act of congress in 1986 to encourage investment in long-term infrastructure, namely energy (Fig. 1). The value of their units is more than US$200 billion, according to a report by Standard & Poor's. The Alerian MLP Index (NYSE: AMZ) allows investors to track the value of the 50 most prominent energy-related MLPs. On Jan. 19, 2010, Alerian Capital Management announced the launch of a n Alerian Natural Gas Index, which focuses specifically on natural gas related assets.
