Let's be honest: the Olympics aren't just about sport. The Olympic Games stand alone as the greatest opportunity a nation can ever have to show the world that it is more than capable of hosting a world-class event. Of course Canada wants its ceremonial displays, security systems, and logistics to be flawless - as good as or better than any in the past. But the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver and Whistler will be about much more than dazzling the world with professional-level facilities, staff, and all the other Olympic trimmings. They will be about aggressively marketing Canada's homegrown hydrogen technologies. Although Canada supplies parts for 82% of fuel cell products worldwide, holds 21% of the world's hydrogen manufacturing and R&D activity, and boasts 32% of hydrogen and fuel cell company headquarters, much of the commercialization of fuel cell technology is occurring elsewhere. However, "this is changing," says Christopher Curtis, interim president of Fuel Cells Canada, a non-profit, national association with a mandate to accelerate Canada's fuel cell and hydrogen industry. "Canada is a leading developer of this technology, and we would like to keep early applications, R&D, engineering and manufacturing here."
