Being able to sense the environment is critical to any organism's survival. The more that can be sensed about what is going on "out there," the sounder one's present and future decisions will be. Sensing technology is, of course, also critical in all fields of engineering, whether you want to know parts per million of heavy metals in wastewater, number of neutrons present in a source sample or whether life exists or ever existed elsewhere in the universe, beyond our teeming and diverse home planet.
