Seventeen-year-old Isha Jain's research on bone growth patterns in zebrafishfins, published in Developmental Dynamics (Dev Dyn 236:2668-2674), earned her the 2007 Siemens Math and Technology competition's dollar 100,000 first prize. It's not everyday that a high school student has the interest, abilities, much less patience, to accomplish such feats.
