New diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of ovarian cysts in cattle

Ovarian cysts and related structures in cattle are presented in this study. Furthermore, the usefulness of various diagnostic procedures is discussed. Based on our results it is shown that even the use of ultrasound scanning does not always result in a correct diagnosis. Histologically confirmed follicular thecal cysts and partially luteinized follicular thecal cysts never were erroneously supposed to be follicular luteal cysts by ultrasonography. Follicular luteal cysts, however, could not be verified in all cases by the use of a 7.5 MHz transducer. Prognostic significance and therapeutic consequences of the various ovarian cysts are discussed.
