rHE HISTORICAL ASPECTS of patch testing were reviewed by Foussereau. A selection of important steps forward is reviewed here, with the focus mainly on the outstanding contribution of some masters in the field in earlier years. During the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries, some researchers occasionally reproduced contact dermatitis by applying the responsible agent (chemical, plant, etc.) to intact skin. Although most of the observations are anecdotal, some deserve special attention.
